Virtual Desktops

Virtual Desktops are as much a conceptual way to arrange and improve your workflow as a technical solution. They have been native in *nix for years. I also look at a couple of Gnome Panel applets to help you work with virtual desktops. The Windows GPL app I found to give similar functionality is VirtuaWin.
