Debian

The beauty of Linux is that it comes in all sorts of flavours, for all sorts of uses. As much as I prefer my own Linux at home, there are times when I am at an office or someone's house and the only option I have is Windows. I like to carry a USB thumbdrive with both Linux and PortableApps on.

One of the signs that we're getting older is the tendency to narrow down things in life that we like, opinions we hold and principles we have. I've noticed that I'm less and less interested in trying out new distros or environments, I've grown at home with the Debian family running XFCE. For the last year this has also extended to my choice of NuoveXT2.2 icon set too. It's time for a change.

Earlier today I wrote a blog post about an odd thing I've experienced in Iceweasel on Debian Squeeze. I've since been accused of calling Debian "evil" or at least implying it by a known IRC troll. That was not the intent, but hey, exaggerating and misrepresenting is the trademark of a troll isn't it?

I've noticed an odd pattern of behaviour in Iceweasel (the unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox that comes with Debian) on Debian Squeeze. It randomly pops up a dialog box telling you that it has to restart Iceweasel to remove or update an addon, and gives you a choice of "restart" or "cancel". What it does not do is tell you what the offending addon actually is, or what it's about to do.
