Cherokee & PHP

A look at how to install the super lightweight Cherokee web server on localhost with PHP support. Additional steps are required to set up a database, or to allow it to be accessable from the internet. I demo with Dokuwiki, which is a fantastic PHP flat file personal wiki. With a new setup, I thought I'd give the theme a bit of a freshen up too.

Basic Encryption

Encryption is something many people either don't understand, or don't think they need until they've been the victim of something it could have prevented; by that time it's too late. This tutorial is about basic practical encryption on Linux using encfs and cryptkeeper. I explain how to symlink config files inside encrypted volumes, as well as extending the concept to Dropbox.

PullQuote

PullQuote is a Drupal module which allows you to select a quote from a piece of text, duplicate it and give it more prominence on the page. The screencast takes you through the process of how to use it, and how to adjust the input filters if they are blocking it from being displayed.

Unetbootin

The install process for putting a Linux distro onto a USB thumbdrive or SD card including the importance of and how to check the MD5SUM. Unetbootin creates the equivalent of a live CD on a thumbdrive, it is compressed and read only; for persistence you will need to install differently.

Virtual Desktops

Virtual Desktops are as much a conceptual way to arrange and improve your workflow as a technical solution. They have been native in *nix for years. I also look at a couple of Gnome Panel applets to help you work with virtual desktops. The Windows GPL app I found to give similar functionality is VirtuaWin.

Gnome Panel

Looking at the Gnome Panel; how to customize the look and feel, as well as a handful of the most commonly used applets. Window List displays the open windows. To restart the panel the command is:

killall gnome-panel

Linux: 

MintNanny

MintNanny is one of the Mint Tools. It's a GUI front end to the local hosts file enabling you to block websites from being accessed on the local PC. It's aimed at home users, parents etc. I talk through how to set it up, where to get blocklists and how to add them, as well as how blocking happens with DNS.

Giver

Giver is an app which allows you to give files or folders to other PCs on your own network. It comes pre-installed in Linux Mint. It will be in other distro's repositories too. The project's home page is code.google.com/p/giver if you want to compile it yourself.

MintUpload

MintUpload is one of the Mint Tools, it's a simple drag & drop FTP / SFTP / SCP client. It allows multiple services, folders or sites to be set up for different purposes. It's a notification area widget and desktop widget.

Arguably the the most distinctive part of the Linux Mint desktop compared to other Gnome implementations. I talk through how to customize it in various ways, from what's included / excluded and how.

MintBackup

MintBackup one of the Mint Tools, an easy to use GUI that allows you to easily backup and restore your documents, settings and installed applications. It can preserve permissions and check for corrupt transfers, as well as give the output options of a mirrored folder or compressed file.

MintUpdate

MintUpdate one of the Mint Tools, a GUI that sits in the notifications area on the panel to alert you of updates to your system. It filters them in terms of stability to only show the most stable, and allows you to update your entire system with a click.
