LMNR (Linux Mint Netbook Remix)

I've stumbled upon a version of an as-yet-unannounced new edition of Linux Mint, LMNR (Linux Mint Netbook Remix). It appears to be a netbook UI on top of the regular Linux Mint 9 Gnome edition. It looks very nice, and appears to be the answer to those with small screen netbooks who want the polish of Linux Mint.

LMNR DesktopSorry, I couldn't resist the joke. I did think about doing a screencast to demo this but decided that it was such a simple process that a blog post would be better.

It's not a new Linux Mint, it's Linux Mint 9 Gnome with the Ubuntu 10.04 UNE UI. It does look very nice and appears to give the complete UNE experience, complete with Maximus to merge the title bar into the panel etc.

LMNR MintToolsCanonical are changing the UI of their Ubuntu Netbook Edition for 10.10 to Unity, which can be added via a PPA.

I tried this and was very underwhelmed. The dock down the side is a bad idea in my opinion, as is the locked upper panel. That being said, it's an unfinished project, so it will get better, and possibly refined more in terms of how it works.

LMNR NautilusI had issues with having both the 10.04 and 10.10 UI's installed at the same time, as both were making demands on the panel. I had to completely remove the 10.10 version to have the 10.04 you see here running properly.

My netbook is a 10" screen so a regular UI works just fine but for smaller screens the netbook UI is excellent.  The 10.04 UI is in the Lucid repos so to install:

sudo apt-get install netbook-remix netbook-remix-default-settings

Log out and switch your session to Ubuntu Netbook Edition and log back in. If you want to return back to the regular default Gnome simply log out and change that session to Gnome and log back in. It will stay on the last session you chose when you reboot.
