Killing The Gwibber Monkey

I've used Gwibber on and off with mixed feelings. Now I use more than just Identica, it's a useful single client. I did notice an odd thing however, and I don't know what triggered it, nor how to remove it; a monkey icon. After some exploring I did find out how, although there must be a more user freindly method than this.

Gwibber MonkeyThe icon is a stream, it's triggered by clicking on a users icon. I couldn't find anything in the settings about it, nor does it mention that in the tooltips. I found that out by browsing the database, which is also how I found to delete it.

Install sqlitebrowser from the repos and open /.config/gwibber/gwibber.sqlite with it. Click on the browse data tab. There's a drop down tables menu with accounts, messages, searches, sqlite_sequences and streams. The important one here is streams. There is a line entry for every monkey icon with that users nick. Simply highlight each line and delete record, then save. You will have to restart Gwibber if it was running while you made these tweaks. After that, you should have gotten the Gwibber monkey off your back.

Sqlitebrowser StreamsWhile this works fine, there has to be a more user freindly solution to clearing these streams. Surely the Gwibber developers don't expect the average Joe to install a developers application to go rooting around in a database just to clear a persistent and no longer wanted icon.

I did notice a cool feature in some of the dents in those streams that don't appear in the main stream; a little + button that expands the context in the same way it works on the site itself. This would be a fantastic feature to expand on. Turpial has a feature to "reply to all" which is also brilliant.

Given that @nybill is well known on Identica as a gun toting chimp, I figured it'd be an appropriate user to demonstrate with.

I'm (was before 3.2) using multiple columns, and on the dropdown where I select the stream for the column, monkeys show up with X for kiling them.

I just noticed that the other day myself. It's not that clear but it does work.
