I'm very reluctant to make this post as I usually keep any personal health issues private, however the effects will impact on people I talk to online so I thought I'd better explain.
Last night I started to feel odd, I went to bed assuming it'd clear up overnight and I'd be back to normal. This has not happened, I've woken up in the same state and I have no idea the cause. The best way I can describe the effects, is that it feels like my body is drunk. I am staggering when I try to walk, my fingers are missing keys or hitting the wrong keys with an alarming regularity, even when I'm concentrating on them more than I usually do. Since I take enjoyment in my wordplay and check my words for typos etc this is getting incredibly frustrating for me. Even when sitting, if I turn my head to look at something different it takes maybe half a second for things to catch up with the move. I've also been very lethargic, with little energy and shorter attention spans for taking things in.
On the light side, you could argue that I get the fun effects of being drunk without the money being spent on the booze to get there, or the drinking time and effort required to imbibe it. On the heavy side I have no idea what's causing this, and it does not appear to be wearing off. It's not an emergency, but given the snow and ice outside I'm taking no chances out there. Frankly I'm surprised that I haven't collapsed indoors so far, let alone adding an uneven, slippy surface into the mix. I have come close of a few occasions so far, which makes it awkward to do even simple things like carry a mug of coffee.
Those who speak to me on Identi.ca and IRC may have noticed more typos than usual from me in the last day or so; this is why. Please take this into account. When I write static pieces like blog posts I always check and fix my typos, "live" chats such as IRC and Identi.ca don't get the same retouching. It's taken quite a while to type this post.
*Update*
Having been persuaded to call 999 and start the process, I've talked to a few trained people and it appears to be a virus which could last a few weeks, on the bright side there is medication I can get which will reduce the symptoms. I'll know more tomorrow. In the meantime, thanks for the concern shown in Identi.ca and IRC. At least I know, or am pretty sure it's nothing serious.
**Update**
Yesterday was surprisingly considerably better in terms of symptoms. I did manage to get to see a GP in person who confirmed the virus theory, I now have some pills to take for a few days to help with the effects. It seems to have just been a bit of an alarming couple of days that turned out thankfully to be something very temporary and minor, if annoying and frustrating. I am now quite happy to report "nothing to see; move along". As much as it turned out to be very minor, the thought that it could have been related to a stroke in some way scared me, it made me rethink a few things.
