Last night I fancied a little change in my Emerald theme and had a look through what Linux Mint 7 comes with. I found myself drawn to a theme I wouldn't normally have considered. Mac4Lin, which is an OSX looking theme, complete with the buttons swapped over to the top left. I had tried this before and my head just couldn't adapt to it. I also didn't want to turn my Linux into a Mac, I wanted it to be Linux. I do like the Scaled Black theme a lot. I guess it's another case of "that was then, this is now".
I still don't like the Mac design with the panel along the top, and the dock at the bottom. The icons are quite nice, but I'm sick of blue. The window decorations on Macs have always appealed to me. So I finally found a balance that I like. The icon set is Minty-Fresh (the default in Linux Mint 6), the GTK theme is Shiki-Mint (the default in Linux Mint 7). My PC is old, it's a P4 with 256mb RAM. With XFCE it can run Compiz albeit the effects have to be subtle, which for me is not that much more than real transparency in the terminal and XChat. I do have wobbly windows and the desktop cube on too.
So what does this have to do with Unix Porn? Klaatu set up a site called Unix Porn ages ago where Linux / Unix users can upload screenshots of their desktops and see other people's desktops. It's been a little while since I uploaded any, and this balance of icons, theme etc is quite new and (to me at least) very nice, so I thought I'd upload them and do a post to get a few more people to sign up if necessary and add theirs to it. These are the 4 new ones I uploaded today. My album with earlier shots is here. It's not porn, it's perfectly SFW.
