I Will Make It Legal

The day after SOPA would have passed into US law, we saw the US government initiate a worldwide takedown of MegaUpload. As many pointed out, if they could do this anyway, why do they need SOPA. Another thought occurred to me; they wanted to make it legal and create a climate of fear. MegaUpload was supposed to be a trophy show takedown under these new laws.

Copyright In The Media

Every week there are new stories cropping up somewhere on the planet of copyright holders clamping down in some way how people can use their work, or in most cases can't use their work. News organisations are among them. I've noticed something odd here. Well, I say "odd", it's just the usual hypocrisy at work.

The Day After The SOPA Blackout

So eagle eyed readers will have noticed some sites had a "stop SOPA" campaign of some sorts, some (like mine) went black for the day to protest it. Most of the techie sites who protested are niche sites. They may be huge well known names within that niche, but the average Joe will never stumble across them. The big changer for the blackout was Wikipedia.

Divide & Rule

On 5Live this morning, there was a debate about whether a tweet by Labour MP Diane Abbott is racist or not. Some people have spotted the real issue behind this comment, while others seem to have focussed on the surface meaning. Before we begin, let's look at her words "White people love playing "divide & rule" We should not play their game #tacticasoldascolonialism".

A Symbolic SOPA Protest Takedown

Most techy people are aware of SOPA and it's implications. Some have different ways of trying to kill the legislation and expose the numbers behind the support. A few large names have done things like publicly leave GoDaddy because of GoDaddy's support for internet censorship. Other sites like Amazon, Yahoo and Google are talking about going blank for a day with a message to visitors to contact their Senators.

Rediscovering ABBA

It's been a while since I listened to any music in a prolonged session, but today I've found myself with a background of ABBA for a while and loving it. ABBA were HUGE in the mid to late 70's which was a few years before my time as a music listener although my sister caught the ABBA bug. I only really found them after they'd split. They were remarkable on several fronts.

File Sharing For Newbies

When I read the "for dummies" publisher is shaking down torrent downloaders for money to "educate them" it occurred to me that there's a niche that needs filled; namely a "File Sharing For Dummies" but filled with useful info that will piss these shakedown companies off, and released under a Creative Commons license.

On Reflection

Responses elsewhere have led me to wonder what people think of me, and how I express myself. Sometimes we don't notice what we're doing until someone points it out to us. It's in this vein that I've decided to do the unusual; ask people directly. I would like constructive criticism anyone has of me. I am not interested in a flame war, or getting into arguments about "I don't do....." etc. This is about me working out how I can or should modify my behaviour.

I am not going to reply to comments on this post, merely publish them.

Who Is Actually "Putting A Relationship At Risk"?

Now that one phase of the war against Bradley Manning has started in court, we've started to see the other phase begin; the PR war to sway opinions and condemn him as a traitor who does not deserve a trial, let alone a fair one. Today Hilary Clinton accused Manning of something he is actually guilty of, although it's not a bad thing.

Why Are Beginnings So Hard?

I've read it many times; starting is the hardest part. It seems to be the story of my life. I'm not talking about a short one-off something with the best of intentions to see it through, I'm talking about starting something and continuing it long enough that it gathers momentum in your mind that it does gradually take shape. In short I need to get my ass into gear, this post is a kinda explanation and a kick up the arse that I need to give myself.

Speaking For Whom

The more I listen to the Ubuntu UK podcast, the more this idea grew on me, although it's not specific to them. Since the beginning the Ubuntu UK podcast presenters has decided to tailor their show towards getting the official nod from Mark Shuttleworth. This means keeping it clean, Ubuntu specific and generally positive about Ubuntu. It hasn't stopped them from explaining their bad experiences with Ubuntu so it's reasonably balanced right? Maybe not so much.

Tesco's Self Service Tills Go From Bad To Terrible

I often use Tesco's self service tills when there as the queues are generally smaller. Perhaps the reason they're smaller is that the Microsoft kiosk systems that run them are badly implemented with obvious flaws in workflow. They've had an upgrade and went even further downhill. Well done Microsoft; only you can be relied on to fuck up consistently and get away with it.

A Personal Update

Over the last few weeks I've found myself trying to do too many things, being caught up in some to the detriment of others, and all the while feeling my wheels are spinning but I'm getting nowhere. From the day I first got a PC until now, I've had various systems of files and folders with multiple copies of stuff in different structures with different names, backups of backups of backups of a lot of stuff I've never accessed in years and likely never will. I have been trying to work through that backlog. It's very time consuming but it's long overdue.

Is This The Beginning Of The End For Identica?

Times they are a changing, for Identica this seems very apt. They've seen a lot of users move to Google+ because the posting style suits them better. They've upgraded the UI to include new features and a new look but the combined effect hasn't been good. It's been downright frustrating for many of us.

Conservatives Should Be Against Patents

When you think of political stances, you tend to find the conservatives on the wrong side of things, or at least on the obvious side, but one that doesn't match their rhetoric. I'm talking about conservatives as a mindset, rather than any individual party here. They tend to be pro big-business, pro profits, pro ownership etc but for patents it doesn't add up.

Properly Setting A Default Web Browser

I'm growing increasingly impressed with Xubuntu but setting the default web browser is a nightmare. In theory, you simply choose your preferred web browser in the settings and it should be enough. Some applications just ignore this and open in whatever was set before them by the distro makers. There is a reason, and a solution.

Killing The Gwibber Monkey

I've used Gwibber on and off with mixed feelings. Now I use more than just Identica, it's a useful single client. I did notice an odd thing however, and I don't know what triggered it, nor how to remove it; a monkey icon. After some exploring I did find out how, although there must be a more user freindly method than this.

Legacy Bookstores Still Struggle To Adapt

Every other day you see a story from some legacy industry about how the modern world is decimating their cushy income model, about how they've failed to react and adapt to what their customers have been demanding, and how the government should step in with some laws in some area to protect their income stream. Why adapt when you can lobby government so you don't have to?

The Day Identica Groups Became Annoying

So Identi.ca went through a major upgrade, it was down a little longer than expected but that's alright. It came back all new and improved. There are lots of issues people have with it, it affected some clients for one. Most of them are not that bad but the polls have made groups annoying.

An Elegant Little Picture Gallery Application

Every now and again I stumble upon something special that I wasn't expecting. This is one of those occasions. I was looking for an easy to maintain way of displaying cool wallpapers that I find. I could do a similar thing in Drupal with views but I just can't get close on the "simple to maintain" part.

Toxic Emploment History

Is there a point where an employee stating on their CV that they worked for one corporation should make them toxic and unemployable by another? Perhaps not at the lower range, but in the higher management positions, and with some corporations it should. The point is, when someone leaves company A to work for company B, can you be assured they've actually left company A?

Clone Wars Now Written By Imbeciles

I've just seen the first two episodes of season four of the Clone Wars cartoon, and a few glaring points in it made me wonder if George Lucas had outsourced the writing to imbeciles. George is not a great writer at the best of times, but he is better than this. I like the Clone Wars cartoons after they grew on me, but this is just sloppy.

Incentives In Movieland

The major studios are constantly beating the "movie theft" drum to ramp up more and more copyright laws, allowing them to seriously screw the fans of their products. Aside from all the fake reports, fake usage of terms like "theft", they always claim it's to "protect jobs in the industry". Really?

Unseen Studio Has Launched

A while back on Identi.ca a throwaway comment between myself and Kevie led to a project called Unseen Studio. To save explaining twice, I'll simply point to the site. Unseen Studio is also the temporary home to a separate started by myself and Cobra2, a Free Culture Torrent Tracker project, the HPR episode explaining that concept is here. Feel free to join us.

How To Create & Use Profiles In Google Chrome On Linux

For a while now Firefox has been my default browser of choice in part because of familiarity, in part because of the addons and in part because of the ability to have profiles, not to mention the ability to redirect those profiles inside an encrypted volume. Chrome has caught up with most of the rest, except the profiles, until I found out how.
